Naming branding and website for Coluco a start-up coffee bar by day and cocktail bar by night.

The challenge

A recent buyout of a small café chain resulted in a new name and brand being required for their chain of cafés. The unique pitch was that by day it was a café and in the evening a cocktail bar – a concept that needed to work for both audiences while creating something distinctive in busy local markets.

The approach

This project required a more streamlined approach, focusing on creating a memorable name and flexible brand system that could work across the dual day/night offering.

The café sector is constantly changing, and this new offering provided a unique day and night experience in the areas where the cafés were due to open. The positioning of 'spend some quality time with us' referenced the extended hours and dual offering.

The name Coluco references Coffee, Lunch, Cooking and Cocktails. The logo was born out of the first two letters of each word. The 'clock' device was based on a dandelion clock and references the day and night offering available.

The results

The brand created is flexible enough to allow various wordplay for messaging and promotions, making it playful and exciting and different from standard café brands.
